FAMILY BUFONIDAE—true toads
Of the three hundred species of this family known throughout the world, 18 species of the genus Bufo exist in the United States.  The poison secreted from the prominent parotid glands can cause nausea and even death in would-be predators.  Males possess a small ovary which can actually become functional should the testes be damaged.  A few species undergo direct development without a tadpole stage (Halliday, 1987; Behler, 1989).
