The ancestors of lungfish, rhipidistians, and tetrapods adapted to primarily freshwater environments. Their ability to breathe air allowed them to breathe in shallow water and in environments such as swamps and marshes where low oxygen concentrations limit fish survival. In these environments they were also more likely to obtain food in the form of both aquatic and terrestrial arthropods.
