CENTIPEDES AND MILLIPEDES

There are about 2500 species of centipedes and 10,000-50,000 species of millipedes alive today.†† They have not evolved major modifications of the ancestral body plan and are among the first arthropods on land which have left fossils. Most millipedes possess at least 30 legs, usually two pairs per body segment.Their reproductive tracts exit the body near the head. Most are scavengers of decaying plants but some feed on living plants and a few prey on small invertebrates. They donít bite humans. One millipede commonly found in woods (Narceus americanus) can reach a tenth of a meter in length.
