FERN FOSSIL FERN FOSSIL FERN FOSSIL

In ferns, the leaves are flat with a vascular system which is highly branched.  Some ferns in New Zealand have leaves that are 6-9 m long and probably the most complex leaves in the plant kingdom.  Some ferns grew to be tree-sized, a few of which still survive today. Some ferns reproduced through seeds but were not ancestors of the seed plants discussed next.
