FUNGI

While some fungi are unicellular (such as yeast), most form long strands known as hyphae.  These microscopic hyphae may form masses which can cover acres of land, visible only when they produce fruiting bodies which we recognize as mushrooms.  Most fungi digest decaying matter in the environment, serving an important role as decomposers.  Others are parasites on plants or even animals (such as those which cause athlete’s foot).  Some are water molds which attack fish and others form mildew.  Fungi reproduce with spores and many fungi are very colorful.
