WOOD TURTLE

Wood turtles can be aquatic or inhabit forests near bodies of water.  They feed on mushrooms, plants, berries, fish, flowers, and insects.  They are most active in daylight.  Wood turtles can climb as well and they have been known to climb six foot chain fences.  They are apparently fairly intelligent since they can learn well in mazes and show a good homing ability.  They have reached 58 years in captivity.  Their numbers are dwindling and they are currently listed as threatened (CITES II) (Ernst, 1994; Behler, 1989).
