DUSKY SALAMANDER

FAMILY PLETHODONITAE—Lungless Salamanders

Family Plethodontidae is the largest family of salamanders with about 215 species.  They are thought to have evolved in North America.  All breathe solely through their skin and lack lungs.  Most lay their eggs in moist areas on land and the young hatch as small adults.  Males can perform complex courtship behaviors (Behler, 1989).
