MUTE SWAN

1.  GEESE AND SWANS

Unlike ducks, there are no gender differences in the plumage in swans and geese.    Geese and swans usually feed only on plant material, unlike the ducks which are typically have a more varied diet.  Their long necks allow them to reach plant material under the surface of the water.  Mute swans have reached 22 kg in weight and trumpeter swans have reached weights of 17 kg.  They usually mate for life and males often care for the young.  Mute swans feed on aquatic plants.  The majority of them mate for life (although an estimated 5% separate).  They were introduced to North America from Eurasia in the 1800s.
