RED TAILED HAWK

HAWKS
BUTEO HAWKS

Buteo hawks can be recognized in flight by their fan-shaped tail and their longer wings.
Red tailed hawks can reach a wingspan of 4 ½ feet. They feed primarily on small mammals but can also capture birds and insects. They can include some carrion in their diet. Given the range of these hawks throughout North America, a wide variety of prey items can be included in its diet. With the exception of peregrine falcons, no other North American raptor can be found in as many diverse habitats as red-tailed hawks.
