HAIRY WOODPECKER

Although hairy woodpeckers superficially resemble downy woodpeckers, their closest relatives are Stricklands woodpecker and the three toed woodpecker. Although animals compose 80% of its diet, it can also feed on seeds and sap. Hairy woodpeckers have a large range stretching from Alaska to the East Coast to Central America. The size of individuals increases in the northern parts of this range (Winkler 1995; Short, 1982). Evidence indicates the similarity in the coloration pattern between hairy and downy woodpeckers evolved separately (Weibel, 2005).
