MOURNING DOVE

PIGEONS, DOVES

Family Columbidae

Mourning doves are one of the most widespread and numerous birds in North America.  They primarily feed on seeds but also include insects in their diet.  In flight, their wings produce a whistling sound.  Doves and pigeons make a crop milk which is rich in fat and protein.  The female opens her mouth to give the young access to this crop milk.
