BOWFIN

When bony ray finned fish first evolved, they produced a number of lineages in their first hundred million years which have only three surviving members today. One of these is the bowfin which is only found in eastern North America. Females can lay two to five thousand eggs in the nests of several males. Males guard the nests and the young during their first week. They are capable of breathing air using their swim bladder. They feed on fish and crayfish. BOWFIN
