PICKERELPICKEREL

Pikes of the family Esocidae consist of long predatory fish. Four of the five species in the family, pike and pickerel, occur in the Northeast.

Grass and redfin pickerel are two subspecies of the same species. They can live 7 years and reach a foot in length. They are typically found lakes or slow moving streams among vegetation. Eggs are laid in early spring and no parental care is provided.

Chain pickerel possess a more elongated snout. They are larger, often reaching 18 inches in length.
