|Most herrings are marine but American
shad and alewives can be found in fresh water in our area. Young alewives
travel from our area to the ocean. After three years, females return to
spawn, carrying up to 100,000 eggs.
American shad enter freshwater to spawn in spring and their young migrate
back to the ocean in their first autumn. In the ocean they typically reach
2 to 3 pounds (but a maximum of 12 pounds) before returning. Some populations
are landlocked and do not migrate to the ocean.
